Numerical weather prediction (NWP): This is a computer-based method that uses mathematical models to simulate the atmosphere. NWP models are used to predict the weather for up to 10 days in advance.
Satellite data: IMD uses satellite data to track the movement of clouds, storms, and other weather systems. Satellite data is also used to measure the amount of rainfall and snowfall.
Ground-based observations: IMD has a network of ground-based weather stations across India. These stations collect data on temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and rainfall.
IMD also uses statistical methods to predict the weather. These methods are based on historical weather data and are used to forecast the weather for the next few days.
